Last night I joined in
Friday Night with Friends kindly hosted by Cherryl. There were 33 people stitching up a storm. During the day I made up 5 fruit and veg bags from some green tulle.
We use calico/green bags for our shopping but I was annoyed with having to use plastic for some of the fruit and veg. I noticed one day while waiting to be served at Coles that the plastic shopping bags come from Indonesia. Indonesia has recently decided to ban plastic shopping bags. It makes no sense that we use bags from a country miles away which has banned them. These tulle bags will get a work out once a fortnight because for the past year we have shopped at Farmer's Markets for our fruit and veg.
There was a little pile of strips left over from a previous project sitting in the sewing room waiting to be dealt with. I joined some wadding together as well.
Today I had more time for sewing and finished the potholder. The blue fabric on the bottom is from a pair of jeans that belonged to David. He recently wanted to cut them up to make them into shorts. I kept the fabric for "Later On". Today was the day to use it for the lining.
Not bad for a project that cost nothing to make but will be so useful. I have a few more pairs of cut off jeans so I guess I will make some more potholders.

That's a clever idea to use up bits & pieces and old jeans. Tulle bags are a great idea too. Plastic bags are banned here from this year, which is wonderful. It should have been done years ago!

Love hearing about your Friday Night with Friends! I could definitely use some of those tulle bags. We can still use plastic bags here in the US but I think some states may have banned them. Love love love seeing your patchwork potholder! I always need more of those too, but don't take the time to make them. Happy Days!
ReplyDeleteHi Bev, your potholder is just gorgeous & so useful too. I love the effect of the patched fabrics together. When you join your wadding, do you just zigzag the edges butted together or do you overlap??

ReplyDeleteGreat idea for the vegie bags, Bev. All my family know to pass old jeans my way, there are so many things to be made from them. Your patchwork oven mitt is a step up on mine, very classy!
ReplyDeleteLove the tulle bags. I too take my own bags and I have been reusing smaller plastic bags over and over for my veges....like your idea better! Great oven mirs too xx

ReplyDeleteHi Bev - great idea with the bags. The UK has recently banned free plastic bags in shops and we have not had them in France for some years but the fruit and veg bags are still plastic. Not that we use many because we grow most of our own. Nice way of using up your scraps. xx

ReplyDeleteI so agree about plastic bags. It is sad to see a whole pasture across from a store or dump site that has plastic bags in the trees branches. Wonderful oven mitt. Do you use any batting or does is the jean material thick enough to prevent burns? So pretty!
